What are the technical advantages of the filter element suction head?

The filter cartridge suction head (also known as the filter cartridge nozzle / filtration suction head) is the core consumable component of the pipette, widely used in laboratory settings such as biology, chemistry, and medicine. Its technical advantages lie in three core aspects: anti-contamination, maintaining accuracy, and enhancing the reliability of experiments. The detailed breakdown is as follows:

Bidirectional anti-contamination, ensuring purity of samples and reagents

This is the most crucial advantage of the filter cartridge suction head. The hydrophobic filter membrane inside the suction head (usually made of polypropylene, with pore sizes of 0.22μm or 0.45μm) can form a physical barrier, achieving bidirectional isolation:

Prevent cross-contamination between samples: When aspirating the samples, the filter membrane can prevent the aerosols, droplets or impurities in the samples from entering the interior of the pipette tip, avoiding cross-contamination of different samples through the pipette chamber. This is particularly suitable for experiments that are extremely sensitive to contamination, such as PCR, nucleic acid testing, and cell culture.

Protecting the pipette and reagents: From the opposite perspective, the filter membrane can also prevent the lubricants and residual contaminants (such as the reagent residues from the previous experiment) inside the pipette from seeping into the current sample or reagents. This not only extends the service life of the pipette but also prevents the reagents from being contaminated and losing their effectiveness.

Reduce liquid droplet adhesion and improve pipetting accuracy and repeatability

The filter membrane of the filter cartridge suction head is hydrophobic, and the inner wall of the suction head is usually subjected to special low adsorption treatment (such as siliconization process), which can significantly reduce the phenomenon of liquid adhesion:

For viscous liquids (such as serum, protein solutions), and liquids that are prone to adsorption (such as nucleic acid solutions), it can reduce the residual liquid rate and ensure the accuracy of the liquid transfer volume;

The pipetting repeatability between batches is better, and the stability of the experimental data is higher, avoiding quantitative errors caused by adhesion.

Easy to operate and reduces experimental risks

The installation and removal of the filter element suction head is the same as that of the ordinary suction head, and no additional operation steps are required.

For volatile and toxic harmful reagents (such as organic solvents and highly corrosive solutions), the filter membrane can prevent the volatile gases from entering the pipette, reducing the risk of experimental personnel inhaling harmful gases, and also avoiding the corrosion of the pipette's internal components by the gases.
